What Is a Carer's Leave Certificate?
A carer's leave certificate documents that you needed to provide care or support to an immediate family or household member because of illness, injury or an unexpected emergency.
Paid carer's leave can be available to full-time and part-time employees under the National Employment Standards. Casual employees do not receive paid personal/carer's leave under the NES, although unpaid carer's leave can apply in qualifying circumstances. See the Fair Work guidance on sick and carer's leave.
The clinical question is different from ordinary sick leave. The assessment considers the caring situation and the period for which that responsibility affects your ability to attend work.
The certificate is about the caring responsibility
It can identify the employee taking leave and the assessed caring period without routinely disclosing the dependent's specific diagnosis or detailed clinical history.
The GP Assesses the Caring Situation, Not Just a Diagnosis
Explain who needs care
The consultation covers your relationship to the person needing care, what has happened and why care or support is needed.
The GP considers the period of care
The assessment considers the dates for which the caring responsibility affects your ability to attend work.
Certification follows the assessment
If the caring need and period can reasonably be supported, the GP can issue a carer's leave certificate for the appropriate period.
Privacy remains limited to what is needed: the standard certificate can document the caring period without becoming a detailed report about the dependent's condition.
Who May Need a Carer's Leave Certificate?
Carer's leave may be relevant when an employee needs to care for or support an immediate family or household member because of illness, injury or an unexpected emergency and workplace evidence is requested.
A planned appointment or routine support task is not automatically carer's leave. The qualifying reason is the need to care for or support an immediate family or household member because of illness, injury or an unexpected emergency. A planned activity can still be relevant where it is directly connected to that qualifying health need.
Sick Child
When illness or injury means a child needs care or support from a parent or another eligible family member.
Aged Parent
When an illness, injury or qualifying emergency creates a genuine need to care for or support a parent.
Partner or Spouse
When a partner or spouse needs care or support because of illness, injury or an unexpected emergency.
Unexpected Emergency
When an unexpected event affecting an immediate family or household member creates a need for care or support.
Ongoing Health Needs
A chronic condition can be relevant when a particular illness or injury episode creates a genuine need for care or support.
Child Unable to Attend School
School exclusion can be relevant where the child's illness creates a qualifying need for the employee to provide care or support.
How it works
For a child-related carer's consultation, the parent or guardian participates in the real-time consultation. The GP may require video so that the child can be observed when clinically necessary. If remote assessment is not sufficient, the GP may recommend in-person care.

Your GP Assesses the Caring Circumstances
The assessment considers the caring circumstances and the information relevant to the request rather than requiring the dependent's full medical history to appear on the certificate.
The GP needs enough information to decide whether the caring need and requested period can reasonably be supported. The amount and type of information required depends on the circumstances.
What the GP considers
- ✓Who needs care or support and their relationship to you
- ✓Why care or support is needed
- ✓The period for which the caring responsibility applies
- ✓Any information needed to support the clinical assessment
The GP determines whether issuing a certificate is clinically appropriate after assessment.
What Your OMC Health Carer's Leave Certificate Includes
An OMC Health carer's certificate records the relevant assessed period and the issuing practitioner's details without unnecessarily disclosing the dependent's diagnosis. A workplace can have its own reasonable evidence requirements.
The document focuses on the caring responsibility, the dates covered and the issuing practitioner rather than providing unnecessary clinical detail about the person receiving care.
Clinical detail can remain limited
OMC Health's standard certificate can document the assessed caring period without routinely including the dependent's diagnosis, symptoms or treatment history.

Common Carer's Leave Certificate Situations
Explore the main carer's leave situations covered across OMC Health, including caring for a sick child or aged parent, longer caring periods, choosing the right certificate type and understanding workplace evidence requirements.
Carer's Leave for a Sick Child
When illness or injury means a child needs care or support, the GP assesses the caring circumstances and the period for which the parent or guardian needs to be away from work.
The parent or guardian participates in the real-time consultation. Video may be required where the GP needs to observe the child, and in-person assessment may be recommended when remote assessment is not sufficient.
For an infectious-illness example, see how long a child may need to stay home with chickenpox.
Carer's certificate for a sick child →Carer's Leave for an Aged Parent
A parent's illness, injury or unexpected emergency may create a qualifying need for care or support. A parent is an immediate family member and does not need to live in the employee's household for that relationship to apply.
Routine transport, general assistance or planned aged-care arrangements are not automatically carer's leave unless they are connected to a qualifying illness, injury or emergency.
How Long Can Carer's Leave Last?
The period recorded on a certificate and the employee's available leave balance are different questions. The GP assesses the period for which the caring need is clinically supportable.
A two-day, five-day or other certificate period should not be treated as a fixed legal leave entitlement. A further assessment may be appropriate if the caring need continues.
Carer's Leave vs Sick Leave
Choose based on why the employee cannot attend work. Sick leave applies when the employee is the person who is ill or injured. Carer's leave applies when the employee needs to care for or support an immediate family or household member.
Compare carer's leave and sick leave →Will an Employer Accept a Carer's Certificate?
A medical certificate is a recognised form of workplace evidence, but Fair Work does not use a universal rule requiring every certificate to be accepted automatically. Evidence must be reasonable in the circumstances.
Employer acceptance and verification →Paid and Unpaid Carer's Leave
Paid carer's leave is available to full-time and part-time employees when they need to care for or support an immediate family or household member because of illness, injury or an unexpected emergency.

Paid leave on a pro-rata basis
Based on ordinary hours of work.
No paid personal/carer's leave under the NES
Unpaid carer's leave can apply in qualifying circumstances.
What Evidence Can a Workplace Ask For?
An employer can ask for evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person that the employee needed to take carer's leave. An award, registered agreement or workplace policy may also contain evidence requirements.
Medical certificates and statutory declarations are examples of evidence that may be acceptable. The circumstances determine what evidence is reasonable rather than one document being universally required.
Mental Health and Carer's Leave
A mental health presentation can be relevant where an immediate family or household member needs care or support because of illness, injury or an unexpected emergency. The caring need matters more than the diagnostic label.
The consultation takes place in real time by phone or video. Video or in-person assessment may be required where clinically necessary.
