Which Victorian Certificate or Evidence Pathway Applies?
A Victorian worker or student may need very different evidence depending on the reason for absence. An ordinary illness generally uses the personal leave pathway. A workplace injury uses the WorkSafe Certificate of Capacity. University assessment issues follow the institution's special consideration process, and school or VCE evidence can follow separate education rules.

The required document depends on whether the absence relates to an ordinary illness, a workplace injury, university assessment or a school or VCE requirement. These pathways use different evidence rules and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Ordinary Personal Leave
For a non-work-related illness, the core question is reasonable evidence of incapacity for the relevant period. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains notice and medical certificate requirements for personal and carer's leave.
WorkSafe Injury
A WorkSafe Certificate of Capacity records diagnosis, capacity, restrictions and return-to-work information. It is not the same document as an ordinary sick note. WorkSafe Victoria explains the Certificate of Capacity and also provides guidance for health providers.
University Assessment
Universities such as Melbourne use their own special consideration rules and supporting-document requirements. Check the institution's current process before booking and provide any required practitioner form. The University of Melbourne publishes its special consideration requirements online.
School or VCE Evidence
