Why patients trust OMC Health across Australia
  • Certificates align with Fair Work Act 2009 evidence requirements
  • Doctor-reviewed before issuance, never automated
  • Accepted by employers, schools and institutions nationwide

AHPRA-registered Australian doctors review and issue all certificates in line with Australian health regulations. Check organisation-specific requirements before submitting, as criteria vary by organisation.

Certificate rules

Which Medical Certificate Rules Stay National, and Which Change by State?

Not every document called a medical certificate follows the same rules. For ordinary personal and carer's leave, Fair Work evidence principles apply nationally to many employees. Workers' compensation, driver medicals, university evidence, and some regulated forms use different state, territory, or institution-specific rules. A national page is most useful when it helps the user choose the right pathway before they book.

National vs state-specific rules

The correct certificate or form depends on why the evidence is needed and which employment, education, licensing or compensation system applies.

National evidence rules

Ordinary Sick and Carer's Leave

A medical certificate is a commonly used form of evidence. The Fair Work question is whether the evidence is reasonable in the circumstances. Read the Fair Work Ombudsman guidance on notice and medical certificates.

Jurisdiction-specific

Workers Compensation

The certificate and claim pathway change by jurisdiction. NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia each use their own workers compensation arrangements. Safe Work Australia provides an overview of Australia's workers compensation systems, while Comcare provides information about claims within its scheme.

Institution-specific

University and Education Evidence

Universities and schools can require their own form, submission process or evidence wording. OMC can support institution-specific practitioner forms where appropriate.

Regulated forms

Driver and Other Regulated Forms

A state licensing or regulatory form is not interchangeable with an ordinary sick leave certificate. Check the relevant authority before booking. Where a consultation is completed by telehealth, AHPRA's telehealth guidance provides the professional framework for practitioners.

How Workers Compensation Rules Differ by State

Unlike sick leave, workers compensation is managed separately by each state and territory. The certificate you need after a workplace injury depends on where you work.

OMC Health GPs can complete the correct certificate for your state where clinically appropriate.

Interstate travel

Getting a Certificate While Travelling Interstate

National recognition

AHPRA registration and the Fair Work Act 2009 operate nationally, so your certificate is not tied to the state where you book.

Valid while travelling

If you live in NSW but fall ill in Queensland, or work for a Victorian employer while temporarily in WA, the same certificate can still be valid for your employer.

Workers compensation exception

Workers compensation claims follow the scheme of the state where you are employed, not where you are located during the GP consultation.

Clinical decision

What Happens If My Certificate Request Is Declined?

Not every request is approved

The GP must determine whether your presentation clinically supports a certificate.

In-person care may be needed

If your case requires an in-person examination, no telehealth certificate is issued.

Full refund if declined

If the GP determines a certificate is not clinically appropriate, you are not charged and a full refund is provided.
