One-day evidence

Why Employers Ask for a Certificate for Just One Day

One day can still need evidence

Your employer can ask for evidence even when you are away for a single day or less. The Fair Work Ombudsman's notice and evidence guidance confirms this.

A certificate for one day is still a sick leave certificate. It simply covers a shorter clinically supported period.

One day or less

Fair Work says evidence can be requested for an absence as short as one day or less.

The request must be reasonable

The evidence requested needs to be reasonable in the circumstances.

Workplace rules can add detail

An award or registered agreement may specify when evidence is required and what kind should be provided.

Evidence can affect payment

If requested evidence is not provided, an employee may not be entitled to payment for that period of sick or carer's leave.

Employment and roster

What Your Employment Type Changes for a One-Day Absence

The certificate performs the same evidence function regardless of employment type. What changes is your leave entitlement, whether the absence is paid and which workplace rules apply to your roster.

Evidence and entitlement are different

A certificate records the clinically supported period. It does not create leave you have not accrued, decide your pay rate or alter the employment conditions that apply to you.

Your employment type, leave balance, award, agreement, contract and workplace arrangements determine what happens after the certificate is provided.

Employment typeNES entitlementPractical effect
Full-time10 days each yearPaid entitlement accumulates progressively according to ordinary hours.
Part-timePro rataEntitlement is based on ordinary hours worked.
CasualNo paid sick and carer's leave under the NESEvidence may still be requested under applicable workplace arrangements.

Fair Work explains that paid sick and carer's leave is paid at the employee's base rate for the ordinary hours they would otherwise have worked. See Fair Work's guidance.

Casual workers

A certificate does not create paid sick leave for a casual employee under the NES. Evidence may still be required depending on the contract, award, agreement or workplace policy.

Shift workers

A certificate can cover a clinically supported rostered absence whether the shift is during the day, evening or weekend. The dates should align clearly with the absence being documented.

Example

A missed warehouse shift

A casual warehouse worker wakes unwell before a rostered shift and notifies the supervisor. The GP considers the symptoms and physical demands of the role. If the assessment supports incapacity for that day, the certificate may cover that clinically supported date.

The certificate can then be provided where evidence is required without exposing consultation notes.

Booking a Consult on the Morning You Wake Up Sick

When illness affects a rostered work day, notice and clinical assessment serve different purposes. Tell your employer about the absence as soon as practicable, then arrange the consultation if medical evidence is required.

1

Notify work

Tell your employer as soon as practicable and give the period you expect to be away.

2

Arrange the consultation

If you expect the absence to be for that day only, you can tell your employer that and then begin the booking process. Keep your phone available for the GP consultation.

Giving notice to work does not itself prove medical incapacity. The GP still decides whether certification is clinically appropriate.

3

Speak with the GP

Phone is generally the default for an OMC Health sick leave consultation. The GP asks about your symptoms, relevant dates and normal work duties, then decides whether the requested period is supported.

Video if needed

The GP may move the consultation to video when a visual assessment is clinically useful.

Patients under 18

OMC Health requires video with a parent or guardian present.

What changes when the request is only for one day?

The length of the request does not reduce the clinical standard. The GP still considers when the symptoms began, how they have changed and whether they prevent you from safely or reasonably performing your normal work.

Work context matters. The same symptom can affect a desk-based employee differently from someone who drives, lifts heavy loads or works in another safety-sensitive role.

Clear timing and a practical description of your duties help the GP assess whether the requested date can be clinically supported.

Symptom timing

When the problem started and how it has changed.

Your work duties

What your normal shift requires physically, mentally and safely.

The requested date

Whether the available information reasonably supports incapacity for that period.

Clinical appropriateness

Whether certification is appropriate and whether another form of assessment or care is needed.

What a Single Day Certificate States

One day still needs a clear clinical record

The certificate records when the consultation occurred and the period the GP clinically supports. For a same-day consultation, the consultation date and certified date may be the same.

If the consultation takes place later, those dates can differ. Coverage for an earlier date is not automatic. The GP decides what can reasonably be supported from the assessment and available information.

Relevant evidence, not consultation notes

The certificate can focus on the assessment outcome and supported period without reproducing unnecessary clinical details.

Before you forward it

A quick check can prevent simple details from becoming an unnecessary workplace query.

Your name

Check it matches the details your workplace uses.

Certified date

Confirm it matches the period the GP assessed.

GP details

Practitioner details should be present and legible.

Certificate ID

Check that the verification identifier appears.

If something appears incorrect, raise it before forwarding the document. For overnight work, also check that the certified date aligns with the relevant rostered shift.

Designed to stand on its own

Fair Work says it does not consider it reasonable for an employer to contact an employee's doctor for further information. The certificate should contain the relevant evidence needed for the workplace request.

Longer recovery

When One Day Becomes Two

The GP decides the final period

If you already think the illness may affect more than one day, you can select the multi-day option when booking. The requested period is discussed during the consultation, but the doctor determines the final dates after assessment.

Requesting more than one day

Selecting a multi-day option flags that a longer period is being requested. It does not guarantee that duration.

Recovery takes longer

If you later need evidence for a period that was not covered, another clinical assessment may be required.

Single-day and multi-day certificates are not different standards of assessment. The difference is the length of time the GP can reasonably support from the clinical information available.

Gastro shows how quickly one day can stretch

Healthdirect says vomiting from gastro commonly lasts 1 to 2 days and diarrhoea around 1 to 3 days, although symptoms can sometimes last longer. It also advises children and adults not to return to school or work until 48 hours after their last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting.

Healthdirect lists worsening abdominal pain, frequent vomiting or diarrhoea, blood or mucus in the stool and signs of dehydration among reasons to seek medical attention.
