Understanding Your Multi-Day Sick Leave Certificate
A sick leave certificate request that may involve more than one day follows the same real-time clinical assessment process as other OMC Health requests. Why There Is No Standard 2-Day, 3-Day or 5-Day Certificate
Multi-day certificates are not issued in fixed medical packages. The GP assesses how the current illness or injury affects work capacity, the likely short-term recovery pattern and whether the requested dates can be clinically supported.
A person may ask about two, three or five days because those periods match a roster or workplace requirement, but the certified period remains the GP's decision. A longer requested period does not automatically require a different quality of consultation, and a shorter period is not automatically a simpler clinical assessment.

The number of days discussed at booking gives the GP context for the request. The dates included on any certificate are determined after the clinical assessment.

Under the Fair Work Act, an employer can technically ask for evidence for any absence, even a single day, though in practice many workplaces only enforce this after two or more consecutive days as a matter of internal policy rather than legal minimum.
A medical certificate issued after an appropriate telehealth assessment can be used as workplace evidence. Fair Work applies a reasonable-evidence test; the consultation mode alone does not determine whether an employer's evidence requirements are met.

What 'Covering Prior Days' Means Clinically
When a multi-day certificate includes a day before the actual consult, the GP is relying on your reported history and symptom timeline rather than a same-day physical assessment of that earlier day.
This is a normal and accepted part of clinical practice, not an unusual request, but it remains a judgement call the GP makes based on how consistent your account is. It is not granted automatically simply because it would be convenient for your leave records.
Review Dates and Ongoing Illness
If your GP sets a review date rather than an open-ended certificate, it means they want to reassess your condition once that period ends, rather than assuming the same duration will keep applying indefinitely.
If you're still unwell by the review date, you'll need to book a new consult so the GP can assess how you're progressing. The certificate itself can't be extended without that fresh clinical check, even if your symptoms haven't changed much since the last visit.
