What La Trobe University Requires for Special Consideration

Three things the evidence has to do, not one

La Trobe University doesn't just ask for proof that you were unwell. La Trobe University's current student guidance on special consideration requires evidence to do three jobs at once: connect to an allowable reason, show the effect on your ability to complete that specific assessment task, and pin down the date the circumstances occurred and the period of impact.

A certificate that states only a period of unfitness satisfies the third requirement and half of the first. It does not, on its own, demonstrate impact on a particular assessment. When you book a certificate for your application, tell the GP which assessment was affected and on what date, so the certificate can accurately record the period of impact.

Apply before the due date, not after

La Trobe University's guidance is to submit the application before the assessment due date. Late applications are only considered where you provide evidence showing that exceptional circumstances prevented you from applying on time. In other words, being unwell explains the assessment; it does not automatically explain the late application, and you may need to evidence both.

A three-day short extension may not need evidence at all

If your assessment is eligible, La Trobe University allows you to request an automatic Short Extension of Time of three calendar days through your subject LMS, without going through special consideration. Check whether your assessment qualifies before you arrange documentation, because three days may be all you need.

The process is to check eligibility, submit the application, then upload the supporting documentation. You don't need to have everything in hand before you start.

Ongoing conditions belong on a Learning Access Plan

Special consideration at La Trobe University is for short-term, unforeseen or exceptional circumstances. A Learning Access Plan provides ongoing assessment adjustments for a disability, medical condition or other ongoing condition. If you have a plan and your existing condition was temporarily made worse beyond what the plan covers, you can still apply. Still, you should attach a copy of the plan and a personal statement explaining the exacerbation and its effect on the assessment.

Unavoidable commitments go through a different process

If you already know you cannot sit an assessment because of something scheduled in advance, Special Consideration is not the right application. La Trobe handles jury duty, court appearances, armed services duty, emergency services work, elite athlete and artistic commitments, religious or cultural obligations, and exam clashes at another institution through a Replacement Examination Date instead. Applying through the wrong process costs you time you may not have.

A separate circumstance still needs its own evidence

If you have a Learning Access Plan and something unrelated happens, the plan does not cover it. Provide the relevant supporting documentation for special consideration, as any other student would.

La Trobe treats false documentation as a criminal matter

La Trobe states that falsifying documents is fraud under the Victorian Crimes Act 1958. That includes creating or providing forged documents, altering a document someone else provided, and purchasing fraudulent documents from websites. Consequences can include failing an assessment task, failing a subject, suspension, and expulsion. This is one reason a certificate issued by an AHPRA-registered GP after a real consultation, with a verifiable practitioner and certificate ID, matters more than a document that simply looks right.

La Trobe University publishes its allowable reasons separately and updates them

The list of allowable reasons and the matching documentation requirements sit on their own page, separate from the application instructions, and are revised between academic years. Read the current allowable reasons page before you apply, because evidence that does not attach to a listed reason will not succeed regardless of quality. Tell the GP which assessment was affected
