Why Deakin University Will Not Normally Accept a Back-Dated Medical Certificate

Deakin University states that it generally does not accept back-dated medical certificates for special consideration. It recommends that the consultation date on your documentation be the day of, or the day following, the exam or final assessment due date. Lodge applications through StudentConnect within three university working days after the exam date or approved submission date, with a separate application for each assessment item.
What Deakin University Requires for Special Consideration
The backdating rule is the one that decides most Deakin University applications. This is where Deakin University differs sharply from the generic advice students find online. Deakin University's special consideration page states that back-dated medical certificates will not normally be accepted, and recommends that medical documentation include a consultation date on the day of, or the day immediately following, the exam or final assessment due date.
The practical consequence is that timing matters more than paperwork. If you are unwell on the day of a Deakin University assessment, see a doctor that day or the next. Waiting a week and asking for a certificate covering the earlier date is the scenario Deakin University has specifically written its policy against. Three university working days, lodged through StudentConnect
You must lodge applications through the special consideration system within three university working days after the exam date or approved submission date. If extraordinary circumstances prevent you from meeting that window, Deakin University directs you to contact your Faculty, School or Campus office rather than lodging late.
One application per assessment item
You must submit separate applications and supporting documents for each assessment item. Uploading one certificate does not cover three affected assessments.

Your evidence must be current
Deakin University requires documentary evidence supporting the application to be current, which reinforces the same point as the backdating rule: evidence should reflect the period of the assessment, not a general historic condition.
Extensions are a different, earlier route
If you need more time and you know before the due date, Deakin University handles extensions separately through your unit site, with a maximum of seven calendar days. Special consideration is for situations an extension cannot cover, or where you could not apply in time.
