When Pregnancy-Related Symptoms Affect Your Ability to Work
Pregnancy isn't an illness, but it can come with genuine conditions, such as pelvic or back pain, extreme fatigue, and complications requiring rest, that affect your capacity to work just as much as any other health condition. A sick leave certificate is available for any pregnancy-related reason the GP determines is clinically appropriate.
If a pregnancy-related condition is affecting your ability to work, book a phone consult to discuss a certificate.
- Pelvic or back pain affecting mobility or comfort at work
- Extreme fatigue beyond typical pregnancy tiredness
- A specific pregnancy complication requiring rest
- Symptoms affecting your ability to safely perform physical job duties
What Your GP Assesses During the Consultation
The GP will ask what you're experiencing, how far along you are, and how it's specifically affecting your ability to do your job, whether that's physical demands, standing for long periods, or general capacity to concentrate and function.
Pregnancy Certificate Confidentiality
Sick leave entitlements under the Fair Work Act apply regardless of the reason, and you're not obligated to disclose that a certificate is pregnancy-related if you'd prefer not to. The certificate itself confirms you were assessed and unfit for work for the period covered; it doesn't need to specify pregnancy unless you choose to include it.
Pregnancy-Related Sick Leave Is Different From a Safe-Job Request
Pregnancy can create two different workplace questions. If pregnancy-related illness makes the employee medically unfit for work, personal leave and medical evidence may be relevant. If the employee remains fit for work but the normal job is unsafe because of pregnancy-related risk or workplace hazards, that is a different workplace pathway.
Fair Work's entitlements while pregnant guidance explains pregnancy-related workplace entitlements, including safe-job arrangements, separately from ordinary personal leave when an employee is unfit for work.
Personal Leave for Pregnancy-Related Illness
Nausea, pain or another pregnancy-related condition can be assessed using the same core work-capacity question as other illnesses: are the current symptoms making the employee medically unfit to perform their normal work?
If yes, the relevant OMC Health pathway is a sick leave medical certificate for the clinically assessed period. Fair Work's personal leave evidence guidance explains the notice and evidence requirements that may apply.
When Workplace Safety Requires a Different Pathway
An employee may be medically fit to work but unable to safely perform their usual position because of a pregnancy-related risk or workplace hazard. In that situation, a standard sick leave certificate may not address the actual workplace question.
The employee should follow the employer and Fair Work safe-job process and provide the specific medical evidence or form required. The Fair Work parental leave and related entitlements fact sheet provides further guidance.
Which Pathway Fits Your Situation?
Sick leave certificate
Use this pathway when pregnancy-related symptoms mean you are medically unfit to perform your normal work for the assessed period.
Safe-job workplace process
If you can work but your normal position creates a pregnancy-related safety concern, follow the safe-job or no-safe-job process and confirm the specific evidence your employer requires.
Pregnancy Warning Signs Change the Pathway
If symptoms suggest a pregnancy complication or need urgent assessment, appropriate pregnancy care comes before certificate documentation. Healthdirect's pregnancy warning-sign guidance explains when medical attention may be needed.
What Can Stay Private?
Work-capacity evidence does not need to become a detailed pregnancy history. Clinical information should be limited to what is appropriate for the certificate or the specific workplace request.
Workplace Rights Are Separate
A medical certificate documents clinical work capacity; it does not decide broader discrimination or workplace-rights matters. The Australian Human Rights Commission provides information about sex discrimination and pregnancy-related workplace protections.

Pregnancy itself is not an illness, but pregnancy-related symptoms can sometimes affect your ability to work, study or travel safely. Morning sickness, fatigue, pain, dizziness or pregnancy complications may require medical assessment. A doctor can consider your symptoms, gestation, job demands and any red flags before advising on leave or work restrictions.
